Live Like A King! Mallorca´s imposing medieval castles provide an opportunity to relive those centuries of darkness and armour fairly authentically.

After seventeen years of closed doors, renovation work on the castle of Santueri, to the southeast of Felanitx, has finally concluded and the castle will son be opening up to the public. Set on an elevation of 400 metres above sea level, this is one of the three “rocky” castles that still remain on Mallorca, and is furthermore considered one of the ten most spectacular castles in Spain. Perched above a cliff, it was constructed to replace the former fortress from the Muslim era, and offers the very best views of the Serra de Llevant mountains and the whole of the eastern coast of to island.

Further north we find the Capdepera castle, built in the 14 th century at the order of king Jaume II. This fortified enclosure can be visited all year round, guided tours lasting one hour are given in Spanish, German, English, Dutch, and French, from Wednesday to Sunday. A good way to enjoy this castle is to visit when the popular medieval market is being held, on the third weekend of May.

Declared monument of historic interest, at Alaró Castle one often comes across families and groups of hikers looking for the mountaintop, which is always visible. There are several ways of tackling this route. One is by setting out from the village of Alaró itself, located in the north-west of the island, although this the longest way up. Another option is to leave your car by the restaurant half way up and start walking from there. All the shorcuts are signposted along this “dry stone route”, and it is quite common to see animals grazing around it. The castle wall with its five towers has preserved, formerly the scene of bloody batles, and probably the place wherebmany Muslims sought refuge on the days following the Christian Reconquest.
Bellver Castle, set on a hilltop 112 metres above sea level, received its name, which means “beautiful view” because it dominates the whole city of Palma and indeed most of the island on clear days. It was erected between 1300 and 1310 by order of King Jaume II and originally combined a defensive function with that of a place. But history had other , more sinister uses in store for the castle, and it was used as a refuge against the plague and gloomy prison.
